DANES INDIGNANT AS NEW ISRAELI AMBASSADOR HAD ORDERED PALESTINIAN PRISONERS THIRD-DEGREED

COPENHAGEN, AUGUST 17 (from RIA Novosti's Alexander Smotrov) - A public campaign is gaining momentum in Denmark with Israel giving Carmi Gillon, former security chief, an ambassadorial appointment to that country.

MP Soren Sondergaard of the parliamentary group Enhedslisten led Turkish, Iranian, Chilean, Indian and Bosnian nationals who are undergoing rehabilitation treatment in Denmark after torture, as they faced the Copenhagen police today with an official inquiry to demand Gillon prosecuted.

They followed several international humanitarian organisations to denounce Gillon's security activities and point out their incompatibility with his current diplomatic status.

As he had a maiden interview with Danish-based media outlets after his ambassadorial appointment, Carmi Gillon acknowledged authorising "moderate physical pressure on Palestinian prison inmates" while he was security chief. Israel may have to resume the practice as `Mideastern developments have come to an edge, he warned with an emphasised regret.

Danish-Israeli relations are cool as they are, and may get worse now that the notorious man has taken his elevated diplomatic post, expect a majority of Denmark's political and community activists.

CLOWNS TO PERFORM TO SIBERIA'S HANDICAPPED KIDS

COPENHAGEN, August 19. /From RIA Novosti's Alexander Smotrov/ - A charitable team of twenty clowns--Danes, Italians, Americans and Australians--started from Denmark's capital on a Siberian tour to perform in orphanages, children's hospitals and summer camps for limited-abilities children in Irkutsk, Ulan Udeh, Buryat republican capital, and Listvyanka, health retreat in the Irkutsk Region.

"It does not matter what language you speak. What really matters is that you help people whose life is harder than yours by merely causing them to laugh or at least bringing a smile on their lips," a Danish actress said to RIA Novosti.

The US-based charity which arranged the event had held regular events on the same pattern in Moscow and St. Petersburg since 1990, but never before in Siberia.

DENMARK WILL HELP DROUGHT VICTIMS IN TAJIKISTAN

COPENHAGEN, SEPTEMBER 3, 2001 /From RIA Novosti Correspondent Alexander Smotrov/ -- The Danish government is allocating 4.8 million kroner (US$560,000) in aid to the victims of the drought in Tajikistan, says a report released by the Foreign Ministry of Denmark.

The money will be transferred to the organization Mission Ost which will carry out a number of measures to support the population of three districts in the Province of Hatlon in Tajikistan's South-West, who have suffered from the drought more than the others. The families who have land plots will be provided with seeds and fertilizers, and flour, vegetable oil and salt will be bought for those who have no land of their own.

Mission Ost has earlier already carried out such actions in the region with the support of the European Union and the Foreign Ministry of Denmark.

According to UN data, as a result of the serious drought which hit Tajikistan, about 1 million people in the republic need food aid. The country needs at least 340,000 tons of grain to cover its most necessary requirements in foodstuffs. The crisis has hit the hardest the poorest sections of Tajikistan's population who still cannot recover from the consequences of the civil war that raged in the republic in 1992-1997.
